‘Inside The Art World’

I was recently invited on to the Art Meets Culture podcast “Inside The Art World” hosted by Ade Sanusi, and it was one of those conversations I didn't want to end.

We talked about how I got into the art world. Not through a fine art degree or a family of collectors, but through the front door, as a customer who genuinely loved art and was buying pieces for her home. I was headhunted by a gallery, got inside, and saw something I couldn't unsee: this world had a people problem.

The wrong people were feeling welcome, the right conversations weren't being had and for all its beauty, the art world was consistently shutting people out and ripping off artists!

So I went it alone in a bid to doing something about it.

We talked about what it actually means to represent an artist, not just the logistics and the negotiations, but the trust, the relationship, the commitment to showing up for someone's practice the way they show up for their work every day. We talked about collectors, specifically, the ones who feel intimidated before they've even walked through the door. The ones who want to ask about a piece but hold back, afraid of getting it wrong. And we talked about fairness, transparency and an art world that works better when more people are part of it.

The reception was brilliant and the messages I received afterwards reminded me, again, why none of this is small. People are hungry for this conversation.

And if something here resonates, whether you're an artist, a collector or just someone who's always wanted to feel more at home in the art world, I’d love to continue the conversation.
